The hotel sign shone out of the night in orange and yellow neon. The complex was sparsely populated. Only two vehicles passed them: a long haul delivery truck that ground to a stop in a nearby parking bay, and a car full of twenty-somethings, trailing the muffled bass from the dance music that pumped through their stereo behind them. On reaching the hotel’s entrance, Stuart and Barnes exchanged a look. The dog responded by taking off around the left side of the building. Jerrico wanted to question him, but they were already passing through the door on their way to the reception desk. He checked them both in under false names. Stuart insisted they take a room on the ground floor. They took their key cards and made their way to room seven. The room was adequate, nothing more. It had twin beds, two wardrobes, two bedside tables, a TV, and a shower. It was all they needed‌—‌a barrier to the outside world. Jerrico could relax his guard enough to rest his wounds. He’d hardly placed his bag upon one of the beds when Stuart whizzed over to the window to let Barnes inside. The dog sprang from the sill into the centre of the room. He shook himself down, snorted at Jerrico, and then turned to Stuart for a fuss.

‘No offence, wheelie bin, but your dog’s a bit weird,’ Jerrico said.

Barnes aimed a low growl of displeasure in his direction.

‘He doesn’t like it when you call me wheelie bin.’ Stuart didn’t look up—just continued with his petting.

‘He can understand us? You can understand him too, can’t you?’ It suddenly occurred to Jerrico this kid and his faithful friend probably had more in common with him than anyone he’d ever met.

‘I was trying to tell you in the café.’

‘Yes, yes, I know. I made a mistake.’ Jerrico struggled to slip out of his jacket. Getting the jacket’s sleeve back over his swollen hand was excruciating. He finally broke free, dropping it onto the bed with malice, as if it had intentionally caused him pain.

‘Are you alright?’

‘I’m okay. This isn’t the worst day of my life, sadly.’ Jerrico planted his backside down on the bed, hunching his weary shoulders.

‘Would you like me to continue with my story?’

‘Have on, dude. I’m not going anywhere.’ He fell back against the stiff mattress. It was only his interest in the boy that prevented him from falling into an immediate sleep.
